The silent film The Battleship Potemkin (1925), by the Soviet film-maker Sergey Eisenstein, is one of the most famous films in history. It was created to commemorate the 1905 Russian Revolution. In this so-called Odessa Steps scene, Eisenstein used a technique known as “montage”, in which a group of contrasting images is shown in rapid succession. Here, shots of fleeing civilians and attacking soldiers alternate with close-up shots of faces.
