Shatt Al Arab, Basra
Located on the Shatt Al Arab in Iraq, the city of Basra is one of the country’s largest cities and serves as the principal port. Founded in the mid-7th century, the city was initially a cultural centre, but is now an industrial, commercial, and transport junction for the oil-rich nation. An Iraqi command centre during the Gulf War, the city suffered severe damage.
