Route of the Rhine
One of the most important inland waterways in Europe, the Rhine is navigable for almost 800 km (500 mi) inland from its mouth in the North Sea to Basel in Switzerland. It is a major transport river and is linked by canals to many of the other major rivers of Western Europe.
