Neo-Babylonian Empire

Neo-Babylonian Empire
At its height, the Neo-Babylonian Empire extended from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea. It was founded by Babylonian chieftain Nabopolassar, who joined with Median king Cyaraxes to overthrow the dominant Assyrian Empire in 612 bc. During the reign of Neo-Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II, the city of Jerusalem was sacked and the majority of its population was deported to Babylon for 70 years—a period of exile known as the Babylonian Captivity.
