| Todor Zhivkov joined the Young Communist League in 1928, and the Bulgarian Communist party in 1932, and rose steadily through party ranks until he became Prime Minister of Bulgaria in 1962. Zhivkov served as President from 1971 to 1989, when he was ousted in a coup and subsequently convicted, in 1992, of embezzlement, corruption, and abuse of power. | ||||||
