War in Chechnya

War in Chechnya
When Russian troops invaded the Republic of Chechnya in late 1994, Groznyy was their primary target. As a result of the fighting between the armed supporters of Chechen leader Dzhokhar Dudayev and the larger Russian forces, Groznyy was severely damaged and the Russian army and leadership came under heavy criticism. Here, women on a peace march to Samashki in western Chechnya are turned back by Russian troops on April 15, 1995.
