On August 9, 1974, President Richard M. Nixon became the first President in United States history to resign. Nixon faced an almost certain impeachment for his alleged involvement in the burglary of the Democratic party’s national campaign headquarters. Although he maintained his innocence, Nixon’s own recorded words revealed that he had directed a cover-up of his administration’s role in the break-in and had ordered the FBI to stop investigating the episode.
