French and Indian War
The French and Indian War (1754-1763) concluded a global series of wars (1689-1763) between Great Britain and France. As French traders established in the Great Lakes region and the Ohio valley came under pressure from British colonists pushing east, fighting broke out in 1753-1754, with the barrier of fortresses that the French had constructed in the Ohio valley coming under attack from colonial and British forces. In May 1756 war was formally declared and raged until 1763 over three continents, Spain belatedly—and disastrously—joining the French side in 1762. It ended in complete victory for the British, who annexed the whole of the French empire in North America (with the exception of Louisiana, which France ceded to Spain in compensation for losing Florida to Great Britain).
