| The French foreign legion is one of the most famous fighting forces in the world. A unit of the French government, the 8,000-strong legion is based at Aubagne. Men who apply for duty must be between 18 and 40 years old, come from a country other than France, and pass a strict physical examination. The term of enlistment is five years. | ||||||
