Jacques Cartier
In 1534, King Francis I sent French explorer Jacques Cartier to find a North West passage to China. Cartier explored the Gulf of St Lawrence and regions now known as Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Montreal. Much of the French claim to Canada was based on Cartier’s explorations.
