An aquatic songbird, the American Dipper lives near mountain streams, lakes, and waterfalls from Alaska to Central America. Its eye looks white because of the rapid blinking of the white eyelid membrane. By tilting its wings slightly against rushing water, a dipper can walk along the bottom of fast-flowing streams in search of insect larvae, small crustaceans, snails, fish, and tadpoles.
