John C. Calhoun
John C. Calhoun was a major figure in American politics for 40 years. Calhoun served as a member of the United States House of Representatives and Senate. He also served as secretary of war and secretary of state and as vice-president under John Quincy Adams. Calhoun was later a vociferous advocate of the rights of the southern states.
