Alexander Nevsky

Alexander Nevsky
Alexander Nevsky, Russian ruler and national hero, defeated the Swedes on the River Neva in 1240 (so gaining the surname Nevsky). Either by force or by negotiation, Nevsky kept Russia unified and free of domination from invading forces from the north, east, and west. He was canonized in 1547 by the Russian Orthodox Church.
