Stela of Hammurabi

Stela of Hammurabi
The Code of Hammurabi, one of the earliest codes of law in history, is engraved on this black basalt stela, which stands 2.2 m (7 ft 4 in) high and was made about 1780 bc. The upper portion (shown here) depicts Hammurabi with Shamash, the sun god. Shamash is presenting to Hammurabi a staff and ring, symbolizing the power to administer the law.
