Santorini, Greece
The island of Santorini, a province of Greece in the southern Cyclades Islands, was referred to as Thíra in ancient times. Most of the island was destroyed by a volcanic explosion in about 1625 bc. The island was renamed Santorini (after St Irene) by the Venetians. Today, houses perch on top of the remains of the volcano’s crater.
