Necmettin Erbakan
Necmettin Erbakan, Prime Minister of Turkey from 1996 to 1997, was the first avowedly religious politician to govern the country since the foundation of the modern Turkish state. His Islamic Welfare Party represented a moderate version of Islamic fundamentalist ideals, but he first came to power in a coalition with the secular True Path Party. His views led to friction with the powerful Turkish military establishment, often seen as guardians of Turkish secular republicanism. In June 1997 pressure from the military finally forced him to resign.
