| Thomas Klestil, a career diplomat and the former Austrian ambassador to the United States, was elected to the federal presidency of Austria in 1992. Under his presidency Austria acceded to the European Union, but his attempts to improve the international reputation of the country following the controversial presidency of his predecessor, Kurt Waldheim, who was accused of Nazi war crimes, were hampered by the electoral success of the extreme right Freedom Party of Jörg Haider in 2000. | ||||||
