Elia Kazan
Elia Kazan directed some of the most noted American plays and films of the mid-20th century, including the plays The Skin of Our Teeth (1942) and Death of a Salesman (1949), and the film A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Kazan won Academy Awards for Best Director for the films Gentleman’s Agreement (1947) and On the Waterfront (1954). In this photograph from 1951, Kazan (right) is pictured directing the actors Karl Malden and Vivien Leigh before shooting a scene from A Streetcar Named Desire.
