Tennessee Valley Authority

Tennessee Valley Authority
Business corporations are formed to enable people to join together for a common purpose and under a common name. In return for investing money in a corporation people receive stock shares, which can be traded on the stock market. Corporations can be established by private individuals or by government bodies, as was the case in 1933 when the US Congress created a federal corporation known as the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to develop the natural resources of the Tennessee Valley. The Norris Dam on the Clinch River, shown here, was one of the TVA's first dams. Finished in 1936, the dam was named after George William Norris, the creator of the TVA.
