Jean Gabin
With his portrayals of tragic anti-heroes, the French actor Jean Gabin (1904-1976) became the biggest star of French cinema in the 1930s. One of his best-known films from this period was Pépé le Moko (1937), in which he played an underworld thief in Algiers.
