A memorial to Indian nationalist leader Mohandas Gandhi, surrounded by eight carved monolithic pillars, stands on the grand esplanade at the heart of Puducherry. The promenade stretches for 1,500 m (4,920 ft) and overlooks the Bay of Bengal. Other nearby landmarks include a statue of Joseph François Dupleix, the French governor general of Puducherry from 1742 to 1754; a WWI memorial; a monument celebrating the life of Joan of Arc; and a lighthouse.
