Book of Durrow

Book of Durrow
The Gospel Books produced by monastic scribes in Ireland in the 7th and 8th centuries are often considered to mark the apogee of Celtic art of the Christian period. The abstract, closely intertwined motifs on this carpet page from the Book of Durrow (c. 675) hark back to the pre-Christian era of Celtic art. Since the page comes from St Mark's Gospel, the fanged creature is probably intended to be a lion, the attribute of St Mark.
