This contemporary image from 1875 shows Captain Matthew Webb being dragged from the English Channel by supporters after becoming the first person to swim from Dover to Cape Gris-Nez, France without a buoyancy aid. He achieved the feat in 21 hours 45 minutes—it was to be another 36 years before there was another successful attempt, but it was still slower than Webb's.
