Terence Davies
The British film director Terence Davies is known for his merciless, yet sensitive portraits of post-war working class Britain, often drawn from his own experiences. Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988) is a disturbing autobiographical account of growing up in Liverpool in the 1950s, and was widely acclaimed at the Cannes and other film festivals. By contrast, The Long Day Closes (1992) is a film that depicts hope and happiness.
