Aleksandr Dovzhenko

Aleksandr Dovzhenko
Ukrainian film director Aleksandr Dovzhenko encountered frustrating problems with the Soviet system of censorship. Even his Bolshevik credentials, his status as one of the “big five” Soviet directors, and the international admiration accorded to lyrical films such as Zemlya (1930; Earth) and his first sound film Ivan (1932) did not free him from the increasing government control of the Soviet film industry.
