Rain, Steam, and Speed
From his first Napoleonic sea paintings, Joseph Mallord William Turner showed a sensitivity to historical change which also appeared in his poetry. Uniquely in his output of paintings, Rain, Steam, and Speed (1844) adds to his abstract treatment of light, colour, and atmosphere a further dimension of wind, heat, and mechanical speed, typifying the industrial age. Turner observed the scene on the Great Western Railway, a landmark in the triumphs of the Industrial Revolution, incorporated in 1838 and built by the great engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
