Mappa Mundi, Hereford Cathedral
The Mappa Mundi, produced by Richard of Haldingham, the prebendary of Hereford, is one of the greatest treasures of Hereford Cathedral. A large and elaborate map of the world, it represents not only the state of European geographical knowledge at the time (it was made in the late 13th century), but also the attitude to knowledge of its makers: they arrived at a circular shape not from geographical deduction but because the circle was the “perfect” shape; Jerusalem appears in the centre because they assumed from its importance that it must be at the centre of the world. East is at the top of the map; the Mediterranean dominates the lower half; the two bright red indentations at upper right are the Red Sea, and the British Isles are squeezed in at the lower left.
