The southern Indian kathakali is a dance drama that dates from the 17th century and usually depicts stories from Hindu mythology. It is elaborately costumed, and performers wear complex make-up that defines the type of characters they are portraying. The style uses detailed mime and is accompanied by musicians and singers who express the thoughts and words of the characters and narrate the story. The vocal music, or kathakali padam, has evolved into a distinctive style of its own.
