Used in poetry and prose, assonance is a phonetic device in which writers repeat similar vowel sounds without a corresponding repetition of consonants. Assonance helps to provide rhythmic structure in informal metrical schemes. The assonant i sounds in these lines from the John Keats poem “Ode on a Grecian Urn” (recited by an actor), function as vowel rhymes.
