Eucharistic Liturgy
The Roman Catholic faith teaches that as the priest blesses the bread and wine of Holy Communion, God transforms them into the body and blood of Christ. This doctrine is known as transubstantiation. In eating the bread and drinking the wine, Catholics ceremonially commune with God. This 16th-century woodcut by Johannes Brenz depicts the partaking of the Eucharist.
