| The Gleaners (1857) is one of many scenes of rural life that Jean François Millet chose as the themes of his mature work. The mellow colours bathe the figures in a romantic, even sentimental, light. Even so, Millet can be considered to be one of the first painters of the Realist school, which treated the themes of everyday life as subjects worthy of the painter’s art. | ||||||
