The Gross Clinic
The Gross Clinic (1875) is considered to be Thomas Eakins’s masterpiece. The painting, depicting an operation in progress, was rejected for an exhibition in Philadelphia to commemorate the centennial of American independence because it was considered too harshly realistic. The painting measures 2.4 m x 1.9 m (8 ft x 6 ft 6 in).
