Paolo Uccello: Sir John Hawkwood

Paolo Uccello: Sir John Hawkwood
This fresco by Paolo Uccello in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence shows the equestrian monument of Giovanni Acuto (Sir John Hawkwood), an English captain who led the Florentine army to victory in the war against the Duchy of Milan in 1390. Set within a painted marble cornice with classical candlestick motifs, the statue represented is similar to that of Marcus Aurelius in the Campidoglio in Rome, and is also influenced by the sculpture of Donatello and other Renaissance artists. The powerful figures of the horse and rider stand out from the plain background, and are rendered masterfully in cold, monochromatic tones. The elaborate base is foreshortened with rigorous application of the rules of perspective.
