Karstic Erosion
The limestone Kras plateau in the Dinaric Alps, in north-western Slovenia, is a perfect example of karst landscape. Kras is characterized by rocky landscape with little, if any, arable land, and numerous caves, sinkholes, and gullies, popular with speleologists. The Skocjan and Postojna caves are remarkable examples of such formations. The Skocjan Caves were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986; the protected area was extended in 1990.
