Procession of the Holy Blood, Bruges

Procession of the Holy Blood, Bruges
Part of the Procession of the Holy Blood, which takes place in the Belgian city of Bruges every year on Ascension Day. Mentioned in 13th-century charters, the procession was reinstated as a regular event in 1970. A golden shrine containing a relic (allegedly holding the blood of Christ, brought back to Bruges from the Holy Land after the Second Crusade in the 12th century) is carried through the streets as the focus of a larger procession featuring scenes from the Old and New Testaments.
