Surveying the Battlefield, Lützen
The German town of Lützen in Saxony has been the site of a number of battles. In this hand-coloured engraving, the French emperor Napoleon I is seen with his generals, watching his troops achieve one of their final victories against the Prussians in 1813. (The French were forced out of Germany later the same year.) Lützen was also the scene of a major battle in 1632 during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), when the Swedish Army was victorious over imperial troops of the Holy Roman Empire.
