Narvik, Norway
The port of Narvik in Norway lies north of the Arctic Circle, but still has ice-free access to the ocean all year round. First established in the 1880s as a port to serve the iron ore mines at Kiruna in Sweden during the winter months, Narvik gained its charter in 1898. The importance of Swedish iron ore made Narvik an important strategic point during World War, and fierce naval engagements between British and German forces took place there in April 1940. Narvik is still a major ore handling port today, with advanced ore terminals.
