Aerial View of the Po, Italy

The Po stretches some 670 km (417 mi) from its source in north-west Italy near the border with France to its mouth at Porto Tolle, where it flows into the Adriatic Sea. In its lower reaches, the river meanders through an extensive flood plain, and is contained within levees and dykes. In this photograph, the river has burst its banks and is spilling out into the surrounding countryside.
