Boer Soldiers, Siege of Mafeking
These Boer soldiers in trenches around Mafeking (modern Mafikeng) in South Africa, are photographed during one of the most celebrated incidents of the South African War. Besieged at the outbreak of war in 1899, the town was defended by Robert Baden-Powell, later founder of the Scouting Association, who held it until relieved in 1900. The Boers proved unexpectedly tough adversaries for the British, and were eventually subjugated only after a long campaign of attrition, during which Boer women and children were interned in the first-ever concentration camps.
