John Milton’s use of powerful imagery and ambitious themes have led to him being regarded as the greatest English poet after Shakespeare. While he is most famous for his epic Paradise Lost, his early masque, Comus, is full of the same rich, sensual lyricism. It was written in 1634 and performed that year at Ludlow Castle, Shropshire. In this excerpt Sabrina, the fictitious goddess of the River Severn, is invoked.
