Elisabeth of Austria

Elizabeth of Wittelsbach married the Austro-Hungarian emperor Francis Joseph I in 1854. A flamboyant and romantic character, she distanced herself from the stiff formality of the Viennese court, and sought to allay her melancholy temperament in her devotion to learning and travel.
