Dunes and Lighthouse at Schiermonnikoog
Technological advances brought many changes to the Frisian island of Schiermonnikoog in the second part of the 19th century. In 1854, two lighthouses equipped with oil lamps and a lens system replaced the beacons that had been in use for centuries. With the arrival of a steamboat connection to the mainland, the island developed into a seaside resort. At present tourism constitutes the main source of income at Schiermonnikoog. With its diverse attractions, this almost car-free island attracts some 300,000 visitors a year.
