Roger Casement

Roger Casement
Sir Roger Casement had a long and distinguished career in the consular service of the British Empire, but he is most remembered for his role in the Easter Rising. Casement went to Germany to seek help for Irish freedom during World War I, and he was captured in April 1916 after landing from a German submarine with arms for the rising. Taken to London, Casement was imprisoned in the Tower and hanged for treason. He is now regarded as a martyr for the Irish nationalist cause.
