Ruth and Boaz

Ruth and Boaz
In ancient Jewish custom widows were allowed to collect up any left-over grain from behind the men gathering in the harvest. While gleaning corn, the widowed Moabitess Ruth catches the attention of Boaz, the owner of the land on which she is working. The two later marry. The engraving is by Gustave Doré and was produced as an illustration for an edition of the Bible published in 1866.
