American engineer Karl Guthe Jansky is shown here in front of an antenna at the Bell Telephone Laboratories station in Holmdel, New Jersey. In 1932 Jansky discovered short wave radio waves coming from a spot in the Milky Way galaxy, a discovery that began the science of radio astronomy.
