1818 Born May 5 in Trier.
1836-1841 Student at University of Berlin.
1842 Editor of the newspaper Rheinische Zeitung, where he expresses radical political and economic views. Government closes the newspaper one year later.
1843 Moves to Paris, where he meets Friedrich Engels.
1845 Ordered to leave Paris because of his revolutionary activities. Moves to Brussels, where he formulates a materialist conception of history.
1847 Commissioned with Engels to write a manifesto for the Communist League.
1848 Publication of the Communist Manifesto. Year of revolutions in Europe.
1849 Tried in Cologne on charge of incitement to insurrection. Expelled from Germany, and settles in London, where he spends rest of his life. Financial support from Engels allows him to pursue study of political economy.
1851-1862 Correspondent for the New York Tribune.
1859 Critique of Political Economy published.
1864 Establishment of the First International. Makes inaugural address and directs its work.
1867 First volume of Das Kapital published.
1871 The Civil War in France responds to the events of the Paris Commune.
1883 Dies March 14. Second and third volumes of Das Kapital published in 1885 and 1894.
