German Troops at Ypres
German troops in gas masks man an anti-aircraft gun in October 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres. Ypres was one of the most fought-over sites of World War I, as it blocked a German advance across the Low Countries and northern France to the English Channel. The First Battle of Ypres, in 1914, stopped the German drive to the Channel; the Second Battle marked the German introduction of chlorine gas; the Third Battle (Passendale) was an ultimately abortive Allied offensive against German positions. All three battles were immensely costly.
