| At the Battle of Borodino, which took place at the village of Borodino, near Moscow, in 1812, Russian forces made an unsuccessful last-ditch attempt to prevent the invading French army, led by Napoleon, from reaching Moscow. Napoleon then advanced on Moscow, but the Russians burned the city, making it impossible for the French army to establish winter quarters there. | ||||||
