Joan Plowright

British actress Joan Plowright is renowned for her theatrical roles in a diverse range of plays. She achieved a notable success in modern repertoire with her portrayal of Jean Rice in John Osborne’s The Entertainer (1957), which transferred from London’s Royal Court Theatre to the West End and New York. From the mid-1960s Plowright won critical acclaim for her performances of many leading classical roles. She is pictured here in a scene from David Merrick’s production of Shelagh Delaney’s play A Taste of Honey.
