Ships of the Dutch East India Company
Ships of the Dutch East India Company at sea fly the Dutch flag. The Dutch East India Company, incorporated in 1602, was the mainstay of the Dutch Empire’s expansion in the 17th century. However, its wealth and importance later declined, and by 1724 it was unable to pay a dividend. It was formally liquidated in 1799, and responsibility for the Dutch Empire passed definitively to the Dutch government.
